At first glance it might seem like a typical open mic poetry event, just then, someone trots to the mic and pours their childhood traumas and guilt from the loss of control from addictions all over it, like if it was a catholic confession booth. Their story is so compelling that you can’t help but to feel exposed from the vulnerability that’s being expressed, as you lock eyes. You try to look away as to save the author from the inequity of their own experiences, as if they were directed towards you. Then it hits you, their strength to openly confess their struggles, make you feel the weight of your conscience from your own hidden confliction. Their bravery, mocks you, yet dares you to liberate yourself from your own prison of guilt, shame and anguish.
This is not just another Open Mic, this is a different kind of Open Mic. One That places emphasis on your own struggles. No matter if you’ve a beginner or have acquired miles on your journey. It’s about your healing experience based on your recovery, for those that attend Self Determined Recovery (SDR) it’s based on recovery substances and alcohol.
Led by the illustrious & world renowned K-Love the poet. Based on her R.E.H.A.B curriculum for self expression, self-esteem and resilience, the participants at SDR are transformed with a new sense of purpose. Thus enhancing their self-worth and confidence in themselves.
Within the curriculum Individuals have the opportunity to reflect and delve into their innermost thoughts and examine their life experiences, including the impact of substance abuse. This process can foster self-awareness, provide insights into personal struggles, and contribute to the healing process.
The goal is to expose and own your misfortunes in order to give others the courage to expose theirs, so the true healing process can unfold. We do this collectively with the strength of Self-Determination!
